Where Lord Vishnu meditates eternally between the twin Nar and Narayan peaks — the abode of Badri Vishal at 3,133 metres above the roaring Alaknanda. The most sacred Vaishnava shrine of North India and the crowning jewel of the Char Dham pilgrimage.
Badrinath Temple stands in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand at 3,133 metres above sea level, on the left bank of the Alaknanda river, nestled between the twin peaks of Nar and Narayan. It is one of the four sacred Char Dhams of North India and among the holiest Vaishnava shrines in the world.
The presiding deity — Lord Badrinarayan — is a one-metre tall black Shaligram stone image of Vishnu seated in yogasana, holding conch and discus. Believed to be Swayambhu (self-manifested), it was recovered from the Alaknanda by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. A natural warm water spring — Tapt Kund — flows beside the temple at 45°C, where pilgrims bathe before darshan even in sub-zero temperatures.
Completing all four Char Dhams of Uttarakhand is the most meritorious pilgrimage of North India — granting liberation from the cycle of rebirth.
Adi Shankaracharya retrieved the Badrinarayan image from the Alaknanda in the 8th century and re-established the temple as part of his mission to revive four sacred dhams at India's cardinal directions — Badrinath (north), Dwarka (west), Jagannath (east), Rameshwaram (south) — the Char Dham Maha Yatra.
Adjacent to the temple, the natural hot water spring Tapt Kund maintains around 45°C year-round despite sub-zero surroundings — believed to be heated by Agni Deva's divine presence. Pilgrims bathe here before darshan, the warm water purifying the soul for the Lord's presence.
Badrinath is uniquely framed between the twin peaks of Nar (the sage) and Narayan (Vishnu). The Mahabharata declares that Nara and Narayana practised austerities here for thousands of years. This geology is sacred geography — the mountains themselves are divine presences.
The Pandavas passed through Badrinath on their final Mahaprasthana (great journey) toward heaven. The temple is mentioned in multiple Mahabharata sections. The Vishnu Purana, Skanda Purana, and Bhagavata Purana all declare Badrinath the supreme Vishnu kshetra of the earth.
Beyond Badrinath lies Vasudhara Falls — said to fall only on those pure of heart. Further, Satopanth Lake (4,400 m) is where the Hindu trinity — Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva — are believed to bathe on special occasions. These rank among the highest sacred sites in all of Hinduism.
When the temple closes each November, a lamp is lit inside the sanctum. Six months later, on opening day, priests report the lamp still burning — undimmed through an entire Himalayan winter without human attendance. This miracle is one of the most extraordinary recurring phenomena in Indian religious life.
The temple opens each year on an auspicious date around Akshaya Tritiya, determined by astrologers. The Kapat Udghatan is a grand ceremony — the first darshan follows a night of rituals and the extraordinary reading of the winter lamp that has burned unattended through six frozen months.
The first six weeks after opening are ideal — skies are clear, the Himalayan landscape is vivid, and crowds are manageable. The Alaknanda runs high with snowmelt and Nar-Narayan peaks glow at dawn. Best for both darshan quality and mountain scenery.
September onwards brings the most beautiful season — the rains have cleared, peaks are dusted with fresh snow, and the Alaknanda valley glitters. The closing ceremony (Kapat Bandh) in October–November draws lakhs for the final darshan before winter.
After Kapat Bandh, the Utsav Murti is carried ceremonially to Pandukeshwar village (24 km below) for winter worship. The temple at 3,133 m lies under feet of snow. Devotees who cannot make the Himalayan journey worship Lord Badrinarayan at Pandukeshwar through the winter.
Sacred offerings to Lord Badrinarayan at his eternal Himalayan abode — performed by our Vedic priests at the supreme Vaishnava shrine of the Garhwal Himalaya.
