The Char Dhams of Uttarakhand

Each dham is a universe unto itself — a source of a sacred river, a divine presence, and a unique landscape that has drawn seekers for thousands of years.

I 🌄
Yamunotri
Goddess Yamuna · Source of the Yamuna River
📍Uttarkashi District · 3,293 m
🥾6 km trek from Janki Chatti
🌡️Surya Kund hot spring (88°C)
The westernmost Char Dham — where the Yamuna River originates from the Champasar Glacier. The presiding deity is Goddess Yamuna, sister of Yama (god of death) and daughter of Surya. Sacred because those who bathe here are freed from a fearful death.
II 🏔️
Gangotri
Goddess Ganga · Source of the Sacred Ganga
📍Uttarkashi District · 3,415 m
❄️Gomukh Glacier — Ganga's true source (19 km)
🌊Bhagirathi River flows past the temple
Where King Bhagirath's penance brought the Ganga from heaven to earth — the second Char Dham and the origin of the holiest river on earth. The Gangotri Temple sits at 3,415 m on the banks of the Bhagirathi. The sacred Gomukh Glacier — the true source of the Ganga — is 19 km further.
III ❄️
Kedarnath
Lord Shiva · 5th Jyotirlinga · Hump of the Divine Bull
📍Rudraprayag District · 3,583 m
🥾16 km trek from Gaurikund (or helicopter)
🔱5th Jyotirlinga · Highest in the circuit
The crown of the Char Dham — where Lord Shiva appeared as a bull and only his hump remained above the earth. At 3,583 m, the Kedarnath Jyotirlinga is the highest of all twelve and among the most dramatic settings of any sacred site on earth.
IV 🙏
Badrinath
Lord Vishnu · Supreme Vaishnava Shrine
📍Chamoli District · 3,133 m
🌡️Tapt Kund hot spring (45°C) beside temple
🏔️Between Nar-Narayan twin peaks
The final and most sacred Char Dham — where Lord Vishnu meditates eternally between the Nar and Narayan peaks. The Badrinarayan image (Swayambhu, recovered by Adi Shankaracharya) sits by the roaring Alaknanda river. One of the supreme Vaishnava shrines of the world.

Why Char Dham is the Supreme Pilgrimage

🏔️

The Char Dham of Uttarakhand — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath — forms the supreme Himalayan pilgrimage circuit. Completing all four is believed to grant moksha (liberation from the cycle of rebirth) — making it the most spiritually potent journey available to a Hindu pilgrim in their lifetime.

The circuit encompasses two great rivers in their infancy (Yamuna at Yamunotri, Ganga at Gangotri), the highest Jyotirlinga (Kedarnath), and the supreme Vaishnava shrine (Badrinath) — spanning the full spectrum of Hindu devotion from Shakti to Shaiva to Vaishnava in a single, unified journey.

"One who completes the Char Dham Yatra is freed from the cycle of birth and death. The four dhams of Uttarakhand are the four corners of the Lord's court — to visit all four is to have stood in his presence at each cardinal moment of a sacred life." — Skanda Purana

❓

Frequently Asked Questions

When does the Char Dham Yatra 2025 open?›

The Char Dham temples typically open in April–May each year. Yamunotri and Gangotri open on Akshaya Tritiya. Kedarnath and Badrinath open a few days later on auspicious dates determined by the temple committees. The 2025 opening dates are usually announced in February–March.

Is Char Dham suitable for elderly pilgrims and those who cannot trek?›

Yes — with our helicopter package, there is zero trekking. For road yatra, Kedarnath can be done by helicopter (Phata/Sirsi to Kedarnath, 7 minutes), pony, or palanquin (doli). Yamunotri has a 6 km path where horses and dolis are available. Our senior-friendly packages include all these arrangements.

What is the best time for Char Dham Yatra?›

May–June (right after opening) is ideal — clear skies, fresh snow on the peaks, and manageable crowds before summer vacation. September–October is also excellent — post-monsoon, crystal-clear air, and the closing ceremonies are emotionally powerful. Avoid July–August (monsoon — landslide risk).

How do I prepare for altitude? What is the risk of altitude sickness?›

Altitude sickness is a real risk above 2,500 m. Key precautions: acclimatise at Joshimath before Badrinath, stay hydrated, walk slowly, avoid alcohol. We always stop at Joshimath overnight before ascending. Our guides carry basic altitude medicine, and we have emergency contacts for medical evacuation if needed.

What do I need to carry for the Char Dham Yatra?›

Warm layered clothing (temperatures at 3,500 m can drop to 5°C even in June), rain jacket, comfortable trekking shoes, ID proof (Aadhaar/passport — mandatory for registration), basic medicines, and a light daypack. We provide a detailed packing list to every pilgrim. Avoid leather products near sanctums.

Can a solo traveller join a group Char Dham package?›

Absolutely. We run group Char Dham departures on fixed dates throughout the season (May–October). Solo travellers can join our standard group batches at significantly lower per-person cost. We also arrange private yatras for individuals, couples, and families at any time during the season.
