Deep within the primeval forests of the Sahyadri range, where mist drifts through ancient deodars and the Bhima river is born — Lord Bhimashankar reigns as the sixth Jyotirlinga, enshrined since the age of gods in the world's most sacred wilderness.
Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga is enshrined deep within the Sahyadri (Western Ghats) range at an altitude of nearly 3,250 feet in Pune district, Maharashtra. Surrounded by ancient forests that form a UNESCO-listed biodiversity hotspot, this is among the most atmospherically powerful of all twelve Jyotirlingas — where nature itself serves as the sanctum.
The Shiva Purana narrates that the demon Tripurasura's son Bhima — born of a union with Karkati — grew to immense power and terrorized the heavens. After defeating even Indra, he turned to subjugate the sage Kamarupa. Lord Shiva appeared and in a great battle destroyed Bhima, with the sweat of his exertion flowing down the mountain as the river Bhima. The Lord then chose to remain at this spot as the Jyotirlinga Bhimashankar — the destroyer of Bhima.
Bhimashankar is the sixth among the twelve Jyotirlingas — self-manifested pillars of infinite divine light. Darshan here dissolves lifetimes of karma, and the Shiva Purana promises liberation to all who worship sincerely at this site.
The temple lies within the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary — a UNESCO biodiversity hotspot and one of the last pristine primary forests of the Western Ghats. The divine is not separate from nature here; Shiva is the forest itself.
The sacred Bhima river — a major tributary of the Krishna — originates from springs at the base of the Bhimashankar temple. Bathing in these waters before darshan is considered deeply purifying and auspicious for all pilgrims.
Lord Shiva manifested here to destroy the demon Bhima, who had conquered the three worlds. This victory established cosmic order and the protection of dharma — making Bhimashankar the guardian deity of the Sahyadri and all of Maharashtra.
The ancient temple is built in the Nagara style with significant Hemadpanthi elements — black stone shikhara, intricately carved panels, and a sanctum sanctorum that has witnessed devotion for over a thousand years. The great Maratha Peshwas also made donations to this temple.
During the monsoon, Bhimashankar transforms into a paradise of cascading waterfalls, dense mist, and emerald forest — a sight of such rare beauty that pilgrims speak of the landscape itself as a form of Shiva's divine manifestation.
Bhimashankar is the only Jyotirlinga enveloped by a UNESCO biodiversity hotspot — the ancient Sahyadri forest, alive with rare wildlife and sacred streams.
The Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary, established in 1985, covers 130.78 sq km of semi-evergreen and moist deciduous forest. It is one of the last refuges of the endangered Indian Giant Squirrel (Shekru) — Maharashtra's state animal — which inhabits the tall trees of the sanctuary.
As you walk the pilgrim paths through this forest, you move through one of India's most ancient landscapes — the same Sahyadri wilderness where sages performed tapas, where rivers are born, and where the boundary between the human and the divine grows thin.
The journey to Bhimashankar is itself a form of tapas — through misty forest, ancient stone steps, and the living breath of the Sahyadri.
The classic pilgrim trail through dense forest with ancient stone steps. Passes the Gupt Bhimashankar cave shrine — a hidden Lingam in the forest — before ascending to the main temple.
A steep ascent through iron-rung ladders (shidi = ladder) fixed into the rock face. Spectacular views of the Sahyadri escarpment and the Bhima valley far below reward the effort.
A motorable road from Ghodegaon or Manchar reaches close to the temple, suitable for elderly pilgrims and families. Buses and shared jeeps operate from Pune's Shivajinagar bus stand.
Sacred Shaiva sevas performed at this forest Jyotirlinga — where every offering made in the heart of the Sahyadri carries the power of nature and divinity combined.
