According to legend, when Lord Vishnu severed the body of Goddess Sati with His Sudarshana Chakra to relieve Lord Shiva of his grief, the Yoni (womb) of Sati fell here, making it the most sacred site of Shakti worship in all of India.
The presiding deity, Maa Kamakhya, is worshipped without a face or form — only a natural cleft in the rock, perpetually moist with spring water, represents the Divine Mother. The temple is the supreme center of Tantric worship and draws tantrikas, saints, and devotees from across the world.

Each year in June, the temple closes for three days when Maa Kamakhya is believed to undergo her annual menstrual cycle (Ambubachi). On the fourth day, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims gather to receive the sacred prasad.
